According
to the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates, every second we need more
than 190 blood bags for transfusions across the world. That means we need per
hour 11416 bags par day 273973bags & 100,000,000 bags in a year. We know
that a adult person can donate 4/5 times in a year, according to this need more
than 20 million people every year who want to donate blood.
It
has many patients around the world whose survival depends on blood transfusion.
Every second of every day, people around the world need blood transfusions to
survive. 4.5 million, the number of American lives saved
each year by blood transfusions. There’s no substitute for human blood. The
reasons for transfusion vary but the demand for blood is growing & growing.
The number of accidents and injuries requiring blood transfusion is growing
worldwide.
Developing
countries face chronic shortages of blood which particularly affect children with
severe anemia due to malaria or malnutrition and women with complications of pregnancy
or childbirth
As
developing countries expand diagnostic and treatment options – for example, cancers
and blood disorders requiring transfusion – the demand for blood is rising
Technological
advances in industrialized countries have led to new medical treatment regimens
and procedures requiring transfusion.
The demand of blood is increasing day by day
with rising population. For humanity we have inspire people for donation and
rising awareness within people.
Requirement
for Blood Donation
To
ensure the safety of blood donation for donors and recipients, all volunteer blood donors must be
evaluated to determine their eligibility to give blood. The final determination
will be made on the day of the donation at the blood drive or blood donation
center. If you were deferred from donating in the past, you may be able to
donate again. It differ the eligibility for male & female. But here we
explain the common requirement for both.
Age:
17 year is the standard ratio but 16 year people can also donate (it has some
law restriction by country)
Weight:
At least 110 pounds or 50kg (it is very to age or condition)
Health:
General good health (means you feel normal, healthy & can do normal
activities)
Blood
Pressure: Normal blood pressure that means below 120 over 80 (120/80)
Mind
set: You have to set up your mind, yes I can do this.
Note:
please do not donate if any of the following apply to you
AIDS,
Cancer, Hepatitis, Organ Failure, Recreational Drug Use.
Health
benefit of Blood donation
When you donate blood, you impact not only the patient
whose life may depend on your donation, but also all those who depend on that
patient that means you save 2/3 more lifes. By donating blood, it is not only
saves live but also much more benefit to you(donar). These are:
Improve
Heart Health
Regular blood donations help to keep the levels of iron
in the body in check, especially in males. This has shown to reduce heart
disease. Though iron is an essential element for the proper functioning of the
body, excessive iron build up can result in excessive oxidative damage.
Oxidative damage is the major culprit implicated in accelerated ageing, heart
attacks, strokes etc. This can reduce
the chance of heart attack by 88%. Additionally, regular blood donation can
lower the risk of severe cardiovascular events such as stroke by 33%.
Reduce
the risk of cancer
Give blood to help lower your risk of cancer. According to the Miller-Keystone Blood Center, consistent blood donation is associated with lowered risks of cancers, including liver, lung, colon, stomach and throat cancers. Risk levels drop in correlation with how often participants donate blood
Burns
Calories
One time blood donation helps you shed 650 Kcal. This can
aid you in your body weight control measures. However, blood can be donated
safely once in two or three months and not more frequently. This will depend on
your health status and your blood hemoglobin and iron levels.
Rise
the production of red blood cells
When blood is withdrawn, the donor's body immediately
begins to replenish the lost blood. New cells are produced by marrow within 48
hours of donation, and all of the red blood cells the donor loses during
donation are completely replaced within one to two months. Therefore, donating
blood helps to stimulate the production of new blood cells. This process
of replenishment can help your body stay healthy and work more
efficiently.
Blood
may flow better
“If blood has a high viscosity, or resistance to flow, it
will flow like molasses,” says Phillip DeChristopher, M.D., Ph.D.,
director of the Loyola University Health System blood bank. Repeated blood
donations may help the blood flow in a way that’s less damaging to the lining
of the blood vessels and could result in fewer arterial blockages.
Iron
levels will stay balanced
Healthy adults usually have about 5 grams of iron in
their bodies, mostly in red blood cells but also in bone marrow. When you
donate a unit of blood, you lose about a quarter of a gram of iron, which gets
replenished from the food you eat in the weeks after donation, Dr.
DeChristopher says. This regulation of iron levels is a good thing, because
having too much iron could be bad news for your blood vessels. The statistics
appear to show that decreasing the amount of iron in otherwise healthy people
over the long run is beneficial to their blood vessels, and diseases related to
abnormalities in blood vessels, such as heart attack and stroke.
Joy of Saving
Lives
It is such a
wonderful feeling being able to donate blood for patient & save her/his
live. There are no substitutes for human blood. The blood you donate is divided
into various components according to the needs of patients. Each component can
be used by different recipients for various purposes. Many newborn babies may
benefit from a single blood donor as their blood requirements are smaller.
Every time you donate blood, you can help up to 3 or 4 individual recipients.
Mini Check-up
Before you give blood, you’ll first have to complete a
quick physical that measures your temperature, pulse, blood pressure and
hemoglobin levels. After your blood is collected, it’s sent off to a lab where
it will undergo 13 different tests for infectious diseases, like HIV and West
Nile virus. If anything comes back positive, you’ll be notified immediately.
Psychological Advantage
Acts of
altruism make you feel good! Giving feels great, especially when you understand
that one hour of your time and one pint of blood can make such a difference.
live
longer
Doing good for others is one way to live a longer life. A
study in Health Psychology found that people who volunteered for
altruistic reasons had a significantly reduced risk of mortality four years
later than those who volunteered for themselves alone. While the health
benefits of donating blood are nice, don’t forget who you’re really helping: A
single donation can save the lives of up to three people, according to the Red
Cross.
